A Ph.D. position in the theoretical nanoelectronics group at DTU-Nanotech is available
The basic aim is to develop a theoretical methodology and use it to calculate electronic transport properties and the effect of electronic current at the atomic scale in nano-conductors. In this project we especially wish to focus on the current-induced excited atomic dynamics in molecular-scale contacts. Our target is to model and predict the outcome of concrete experimental situations using first principles calculations based on density functional theory and non-equilibrium Greens function techniques [1-3].
The Ph.D. will be associated with the Theoretical Nanoelectronics group at the Department of Micro and Nanotechnology (www.nanotech.dtu.dk/TNE) and will engage in a close collaboration with the Nano-Science Center, University of Copenhagen and international partners on both the theoretical and experimental side.

Specialisation options in the second year are agroforestry systems (Bangor), socio-economics of tropical forestry (Copenhagen), tropical forest management (Dresden), environmental management and policies for tropical forests (Montpellier), or ethics in forestry and responsible trade in tropical forest products and services (Padova). The teaching staff is very active in research and students profit from their global expertise.
The SUTROFOR offers an integrated study programme with a resulting double degree that is fully recognised in all the participating countries. Selection requires a strong Bachelor’s degree, the applicant’s CV, documentation of proficiency in English (and if choosing Montpellier, French in some cases), the applicant’s personal statement of motivation, and recommendations from two references. The language of instruction is English with a French option in Montpellier.
Category A Scholarships for Third-country nationals: Total 48.000 EUR
Category A scholarships can be awarded to masters students from all countries other than the 27 EU member states and EEA/EFTA states: Iceland, Lichtenstein and Norway. Further scholarship details and application:
The position is connected to a project entitled: Neuronal regulation of serum osmolarity – project part: The role of calmodulin in the regulation of the TRPV4 channel.
Members of the Transient Receptor Potential (TRP) vanilloid channel family have been suggested as osmosensors in special regions in the brain. The proposed project will mainly focus on the TRPV4 channel as a primary sensor/modulator of the neuronal activity of the omolarity sensing brain region. Part of the project, to be carried out in the laboratory of Martin Berchtold at the Biocenter deals with the regulation of TRPV4 by Calmodulin (CaM). As TRPV4 has been proposed to be regulated by CaM a main goal is to study this regulation in a genetic model system (chicken DT-40 cell line) established in our laboratory. We will construct DT-40 clones (with adjustable CaM expression) stably expressing TRPV4 in wt and mutant form. This will be followed by analysing osmoregulation, cell volume regulation and TRPV4 channel activity using patch clamp methods in close collaboration with the group of Else Hoffmann at our section. The project also includes analysis of the molecular nature of the interaction between CaM and TRPV4, as well as analysis of the downstream signaling following Ca 2+ /CaM dependent TRPV4 channel activity.
Qualification
The candidate for this position should have a PhD and profound knowledge in molecular biology, cell biology and preferably also in cell signaling and protein interaction analysis.
Terms of appointment and payment accord to the agreement between the Ministry of Finance and The Danish Confederation of Professional Associations on Academics in the State. For post docs salary is based on seniority and between 383.670 and 407.006 DKK and an annual supplement up to DKK 49.280 before pension contribution. Negotiation for further supplement will be possible.
Additional information on Danish postdoc appointments, including salaries and taxation, is available here
Applications must be in English and include in the following order:
- Curriculum vitae
- Description of current and previous research (max. 5 pages)
- Documentation of teaching experience and other qualifications
- Full contact details (name, address, telephone & email) of 2 referees
- Complete list of publications
The University of Copenhagen wishes to reflect the diversity of society and welcomes applications from all qualified candidates regardless of personal background.
Further inquiries of the position can be obtained by contacting: Prof. M. Berchtold, Department of Biology (mabe@bio.ku.dk, 35322089)
Applications must be emailed as a single PDF file to job@bio.ku.dk no later than June 7th, 2010, at 12.00 noon. Please mark the subject line with your name. Applications received thereafter will not be considered

At Centre for International Business Law (CIBL) at Department of Business Law at Aarhus School of Business, Aarhus University, 5 PhD scholarships will be available from July 1, 2010, or as soon as possible thereafter.
The overall research theme of the scholarships is sustainability and the internationalisation of law. Focus is on the initiatives of legal and quasi-legal character that have been launched within the area of sustainability with importance for the business community. This encompasses rules that influence the business community’s legal relations with investors, suppliers, other business associates and society in a broad sense. In addition to these matters being regulated on a national level, there is often a regulation on EU-level and from time to time also on UN, OECD and WTO levels. The fact that there are several regulators can mean that companies could be facing particularly encumbering and mutually conflicting demands. That is why it is very important to focus on the consequences of the internationalisation of law in the analysis of how to legally secure sustainability in the best way, and therefore this is expected to be a recurring theme in all PhD projects.
The research theme involves a number of different legal fields, such as contract law, company law, EU-law, environmental law, energy law, climate law, intellectual property law and competition law. The research projects can e.g. revolve around the following areas (see detailed description here), but applications with focus on other areas are also welcome:
The scholarships are so-called mobility scholarships, which means that applicants with a qualifying exam from Aarhus University cannot apply.
The scientific staff of the Department of Business Law includes 23 researchers of whom 10 are full professors. At the moment there are 13 PhD students at the department.
A PhD student in Denmark must complete an individually planned PhD course programme within the relevant research area and conduct a research project under the supervision of experienced senior researchers. As part of the programme the PhD student is also expected to spend some time (up to six months), with coverage of travel and accommodation expenses, at another – often foreign – research institution. During the programme, the PhD student is further expected to gain teaching experience within the subject area as well as experience with other forms of dissemination of research results. ASB also finances participation in relevant PhD courses and scientific conferences. In addition, it is expected that PhD students participate in and contribute to the other activities of the department.
Conditions of employment
The PhD scholarship has a duration of three years. Graduates and students expecting to complete their study programme in the near future may apply for the scholarship. The employment is covered by a national collective agreement.
The applicant’s research potential will be the determining factor for a positive academic assessment. For further information on admission criteria and ASB’s PhD programme, please look here.
If you have any questions about the fellowship etc., please feel free to contact Henrik Scriver, deputy head, phone number +45 8948 6560, e-mail: hsc-at-asb.dk.
Questions about the preparation of the project description may be directed to Karsten Engsig Sørensen, Head of centre, phone number +45 8948 6335, e-mail: kas-at-asb.dk.
Application and assesment
The following material must be attached:
Deadline for application is May 12, 2010, at 12:00 noon.
The applications will subsequently be assessed by an expert selection committee, and applicants will receive the committee’s assessment of the individual application and the response to the application from ASB approx. 1 month after the expiry of the deadline for application.
The assessment of the application comprises an overall assessment of the applicant and his or her qualifications. Particular weight is attached to the project proposal, the grades obtained by the applicant in the study programme, and to whether the applicant, during the study programme or in another manner, has displayed special skills in writing major papers, e.g. a thesis.

PhD students in Denmark work under very favourable terms: They are employed on a full-time basis for three years, and the salary is enough to cover all necessary accommodation and living costs and to lead an active life. A PhD student does not pay university fees. PhD students at Aarhus School of Business (ASB), work under almost the same terms as other research staff, i.e. they have their own office space with a computer, incl. internet access, email, phone etc., as well as access to secretarial assistance etc. Moreover, expenses in connection with the scientific work are covered, e.g. participation in research courses and academic conferences in Denmark and abroad. There are also good and well-paid job opportunities in Denmark for people with a PhD degree, both within and outside the university sector. |
