2012-2013 Fulbright-Nehru Doctoral and Professional Research Fellowships

Fulbright-Nehru Doctoral and Professional Research Fellowships research fellowships, for a maximum period of nine months, are designed for scholars who are registered for a Ph.D. at an Indian institution and also for professionals with significant work experience and accomplishments.

Study Subject: Agricultural Sciences; Economics; Education; Energy, Sustainable Development and Climate Change; Environment; International Relations; Management and Leadership Development; Media and Communications with focus on Public Service Broadcasting; Public Administration; Public Health; Science and Technology; Study of India with focus on contemporary issues; and Study of the United States. For Study of India or the Study of the United States (American Studies) the areas could include: language and literature, history, government, economics, society and culture, religion, and film studies.

Scholarship Description
These fellowships provide a monthly stipend, Accident and Sickness Program for Exchanges per US Government guidelines, round-trip economy class air travel, applicable allowances and modest affiliation fees, if any. Selected scholars will have opportunities to audit non-degree courses, conduct research and gain practical work experience in suitable settings in the US. No allowances are provided for dependents. The grant is not sufficient to support family members.

Indian Government Scholarship for Indonesian Students

Overview
The Government of India scholarships are provided by the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) through its General Cultural Scholarships Scheme (GCSS) for the year 2011-12.


The scholarships are offered to meritorious Indonesian students to undertake higher studies in India under undergraduate (S1), post-graduate (S2) and Ph.D. (S3). Students can opt for any course in the fields of arts, performing arts, architecture, literature, commerce and science; degree courses in engineering and agriculture; and doctoral and post-doctoral courses in various disciplines. Government of India will provide living allowance, contingent grant, accommodation charges, tuition fee and other benefits, including expenses on medical treatment and study tour to the students selected for the scholarship. However, the cost of air passage to India and back for all students and expenses on laboratory chemicals and related incidentals for science stream students would have to be borne by them or by their sponsors. Scholarships are not provided for medicine (MBBS), dentistry (BDS), nursing & other courses related to medicine.
Applications for the 2011-12 academic year are now being accepted in the Embassy of India in Jakarta. Last date for acceptance of applications is 22 January 2011.

Eligible Candidates
To be eligible to apply for ICCR scholarship, you must:
  • be an Indonesian national;
  • be usually and currently resident in Indonesia;
  • not have permanent resident status for any other country;
  • be a minimum of 18 years of age at the time of commencement of scholarship in India;
  • not currently hold a scholarship from ICCR under GCSS;
  • not availed of a scholarship from ICCR under GCSS;
  • priority will be given to candidates who have not had scholarships and have not been awarded scholarship previously to study in India;
  • be applying to commence a new course of study at a level higher than your current qualification;
  • be able to take up the scholarship in the year in which it is offered (2011);
  • for civil servants, be endorsed by your sponsoring organization, i.e. Ministry, Department, statutory authority, agency.
Mandatory requirements for GCSS Scholarships application*:
  • A record of high-level academic achievement (with GPA of at least 2.75) in the last qualifying examination at the School or the University
  • Syllabus of the last qualifying examination
  • Certified/sworn copies of all documents such as marks sheets etc. with English translations
  • To pass an English Proficiency Test to be conducted by the Embassy
  • For Students applying for doctoral/post-doctoral courses or architecture: Synopsis of the proposed area of research
  • Certificate of Physical Fitness, as prescribed in Appendix-2 of the Application Form
  • Medical certificate attesting that the candidate is free from AIDS
  • Curriculum Vitae in English (HP and e-mail required)
  • Certificate in English-language course/TOEFL score minimum 500
  • Recommendation letter from former School/University/Office

TWAS-DBT Postgraduate Fellowship Programme in Biotechnology, India

The Department of Biotechnology (DBT) of the Ministry of Science and Technology, India, and TWAS have instituted a fellowship programme for foreign scholars from developing countries who wish to pursue research towards a PhD in Biotechnology

Scholarship Description: TWAS-DBT Postgraduate Fellowships are tenable at key biotechnology research institutions in India for a period of up to five years.

Applicants may be registered for a PhD degree in their home country, or may enrol in a PhD course at a host laboratory/institute in India. To help candidates in their choice of a suitable host institution a list of biotechnology institutes in India is available here: List_Biotechn_India.pdf. However, candidates are free to choose an Indian biotechnology institution that does not appear on the list.
DBT will provide a monthly stipend to cover for living costs, food and health insurance. The monthly stipend will not be convertible into foreign currency. In addition, the fellowship holder will receive a house rent allowance.

The language of instruction is English

Eligibility

Applicants for these fellowships must meet the following criteria:
  • Be a maximum age of 30 years on 31 December of the application year.
  • Be nationals of a developing country (other than India).
  • Hold a Master’s or equivalent degree in science or engineering.
  • Be regularly employed in a developing country and hold a research assignment there.
  • For SANDWICH Fellowships: Be registered PhD students in their home country and provide the “Registration and No Objection Certificate” from the HOME university (sample is included in the application form).
  • For SANDWICH Fellowships: Be registered PhD students in their home country and provide the “Registration and No Objection Certificate” from the HOME university (sample is included in the application form).
  • For FULL-TIME Fellowships: Be willing to register at a university in India.
  • Be accepted at a biotechnology institution in India (see sample Acceptance Letter included in the application form).

Jawahar Lal Nehru Scholarships for Doctoral Studies 2010

CATEGORIES OF SCHOLARSHIPS:
The scholarships are available to the following categories of persons:
(A) Indian Nationals for Ph.D. study in India; and
(B) Nationals of other Asian count

AREAS OF SPECIALISATION / SUBJECT:
A candidate may apply for scholarship in any one of the following areas of specialisation:
1. Science and Technology as an integral component of economic and social activity, including the Philosophy of Science
2. Comparative Studies in Religion and Culture
3. International Relations and Constitutional Studies
4. Indian History, Civilisation and Culture
5. Interface of Social Change and Economic Development
6. Environmental Ecology and Sustainable Development
7. Studies in the life and works of Jawaharlal Nehru

ELIGIBILITY CONDITIONS:
At the time of making the application for scholarship, a candidate should
1. hold a FIRST Class Postgraduate degree
2. already be registered/admitted for Ph.D. degree with a University/Institution in India approved by the Government in a subject in one of the areas of specialisation listed above. Those who have applied for registration and have not yet been registered, are not eligible to apply.
3. not be above 35 years of age at the time of applying.
4. be a full-time Ph.D. Scholar.ries for Ph.D. study in India.

DURATION OF SCHOLARSHIP:
Ordinarily upto 2 years.

VALUE OF SCHOLARSHIP FOR BOTH THE CATEGORIES:
(a) Maintenance allowance including Tuition fee Rs. 9,000 per month
(b) Annual contingent expenses for study tours within India, books, stationery, thesis costs, etc. Rs. 12,000 per annum
(c) Sleeper Class Train fare from the place of residence or study in India for interview with the Selection Board.
 
UNDERTAKING:
The selected candidate will be required to give an Undertaking (in the attached format) to observe the terms and conditions of the scholarship.
 
LAST DATE:
Completed application form together with all the necessary enclosures should reach Administrative Secretary, Jawaharlal Nehru Memorial Fund, Teen Murti House, New Delhi-110 011 on or before 31 May. The candidates are advised to send their applications as soon as possible. The Fund will not be responsible for any postal delays in reaching the application by the due date. The Selection Committee’s decision to call a candidate for interview or select a candidate for scholarship will be final and no representation in this regard will be entertained. Shortlisted candidates will be called for interview at the end of November or early December.
 
ENCLOSURES:
The candidates should ensure that the following documents are securely attached seriatim to the Application Form before despatch :
(1) A passport size photograph to be pasted on the form.
(2) An attested copy of Ph.D. registration/admission letter from the College/University.
(3) A synopsis of not more than 1500 words or about 3 pages of 1.5 spaced text.
(4) University Doctoral Monitoring Committee’s report or Ph.D. Supervisor’s report as per details required in C-8 of the Application Form.
(5) Attested copies of Postgraduate degree, marksheet and all other educational certificates/ degrees showing marks obtained and the date of birth.
Incomplete, unsigned or application forms from ineligible candidates or without the necessary enclosures are liable to be rejected. Please read the eligibility conditions carefully and apply only if you fulfil all the conditions.
