PhD Positions 2011 in Multimedia and Geometry at Utrecht University, Netherlands

Posted by Inkpower On Saturday, April 2, 2011 0 comments
The research involves the design and analysis of methods for trajectories of objects moving in 2- or 3-dimensional space. A proper definition of a “median trajectory” based on a collection of trajectories is sought, as well as efficient algorithms for computing such a median. The definition and algorithms should be robust when noise or outliers are present. The research continues by investigating how median trajectories can be used in various applications. These include trajectory collection visualization, trajectory clustering, classification, and related problems, for which efficient algorithms and implementations should be developed. This will be done in collaboration with researchers in these application areas, whose data will be used.

    Job description
    As a PhD student you will participate in the VIDI-project The Power of the Family. Family Influences on Long-Term Fertility Decline in Europe, 1850-2010. This project is funded by the Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research (NWO) and directed by Dr Hilde Bras (principal investigator). See http://www.ru.nl/hlcs/the_power_of_the_family .

    Over the last 160 years a remarkable decline of fertility has taken place in most European societies. Intriguingly, substantial national and regional disparities in fertility levels and reproductive change have been prevalent and remain existent. By combining previous economic and ideational explanations with theories on family influences and the cultural variation therein, the project aims at opening up new vistas for understanding long-term population change.
    Together with the principal investigator and two other PhD students, you will study the relationship between family and reproductive behaviour across Europe and over time from either a qualitative or quantitative perspective, using micro and macro level data.

    Key themes in the project are:

    1. the composition and geographical dispersion of kinship networks;
    2. the influence of kin support and competition on reproductive behaviour;
    3. the intergenerational transmission of reproductive behaviour;
    4. sibling interdependencies in reproductive behaviour;
    5. husband-wife relations and reproductive behaviour.
    PhD student 1 will explore the project’s themes through oral history and qualitative documents.
    PhD student 2 will investigate the project’s themes on the basis of quantitative historical micro data for cohorts born between 1850 and 1920.
    PhD student 3 will examine the project’s themes on the basis of quantitative contemporary micro data for cohorts born since 1920.

    Requirements
    You should have:
    • a (Research) Master’s degree in history, anthropology or anthropological demography (PhD project 1) or a (Research) Master’s degree in history, demography, sociology or economics (PhD projects 2-3);
    • a strong statistical background (PhD projects 2-3) or experience with oral history or ethnographic research and interpretative methods (PhD project 1);
    • an outstanding record of undergraduate and Master’s degree work;

    Phd Studentship, How Mushrooms Feed on Sugars, Wageningen UR (University & Research Centre), The Netherlands

    Posted by Inkpower On Tuesday, November 23, 2010 0 comments
    Vacancy number AFSG-FCH-0003

    We are looking for
    A PhD student for a STW project aiming at the characterization of polysaccharides involved in the process of composting and growth of the white buttom mushroom Agaricus bisporus. Enzymatic conversion processes will be monitored and enzyme resistant carbohydrates will be identified.

    The white button mushroom Agaricus bisporus is produced and consumed at large scale. It is produced on compost of straw and horse manure. The process of composting and growth of the white button mushroom is nearly a black box. It is not known which carbohydrate components are converted (and which are not) and when this takes place in the process. The need for this kind of information is exemplified by the fact that up to 25% of the compost is not converted into fungal biomass.

    The aim of this project is to understand and improve the degradation of the carbohydrates in the substrate during composting and growth of the white button mushroom. This will be done by the characterization of the glycosidic substrates in the various states of the growing process. Enzymes involved in substrate degradation will be biochemically characterized and tested for their action towards isolated Agaricus enzyme-resistant carbohydrate structures in order to find solutions to improve substrate conversion.

    The PhD candidate will make use of advanced (bio)chemical methods to isolate and characterize polysaccharides and enzymes. Resistant oligo-and polysaccharides will be analyzed/identified using various forms of analytical and preparative chromatography and Maldi Tof/Tof MS, GC-, LC- and CE-MS and NMR-techniques. The PhD candidate will closely cooperate Fungal Biodiversity Center (CBS) and Utrecht University and with industrial partners participating in the project.

    Requirements
    The candidate should have a MSc in Food Technology / Biotechnology / Molecular Life Sciences.Experience with analytical and preparative chromatography, mass spectrometry and enzymology adds to the suitability of a candidate for this post. The suitable candidate likes to work on the interface of chemistry and biochemistry and technology. The candidate should be able to work in a multi-disciplinary group and have excellent communicative and analytical skillsand is required to be fluent in English, both speaking and reading/writing.

    We offer
    We offer you a temporary position for a period of 1.5 years with extension of 2.5 years after successful evaluation. Gross salary per month € 2.042,- in the first year rising up to € 2.612,- per month in the fourth year.

    We not only offer a competitive salary but also good (study) leave and a pension of the ABP Pension Fund.
    Wageningen UR uses a so-called cafeteria model (Optare) that makes it possible to vary the conditions of employment.

    We think it is important to have a good balance between work and private life. Depending on the specific job and working place, this balance can be made possible in various ways, for example, flexible working hours, working part time or the possibility of taking sabbatical leave.

    The Laboratory of Food Chemistry (generates and disseminates knowledge of the molecular properties and interactions of carbohydrates, proteins and phytonutrients within the food matrix during processing. Research is on one hand focused on identifying key components that determine the quality of food raw materials and their processing to ingredients or food products and on chemical changes occurring within these components during storage and processing. On the other hand, research is focused on controlling enzymatic processes that are used during processing of raw materials to ingredients or food products.
    By a solid knowledge in this area, the quality aspects of food products can be explained and moreover predicted. Besides this, with knowledge on chemical and biochemical conversions, processes can be controlled to have a more sustainable use of agricultural raw material (less by-products, less use of energy, chemicals and water) than currently in place, and new, high-grade or health-beneficial final products or ingredients can be manufactured.

    The Laboratory comprises about 45 people of which 10 permanent staff (professors + technicians) and about 35 PhD students, post-docs and temporarily employed technicians. Beasiswa Belanda di Wageningen Univiersity

    Posted by Inkpower On Monday, April 5, 2010 0 comments
    Please see below PhD position for Indonesian candidates at Wageningen University, the Netherlands.
    Ph.D. POSITION, Plant Production Systems in “JARAK: the commoditization of an alternative biofuel crop in Indonesia” at the Plant Production Systems Group and Agrosystems Research Department of Plant Research International, part of Wageningen University and Research Centre, the Netherlands in cooperation with the Research Center for Natural Resources and Biotechnology (IPB), Bogor Agricultural University, Indonesia.

    Title PhD Project:

    Growth, development and production of Jatropha curcas in Indonesia.

    Description

    Although heavily promoted for its many advantageous properties, there is little scientifically-sound information available on the growth, development and production of the Jatropha curcas under different environmental circumstances and in different production systems. As it is essentially a wild species lacking clearly distinguished varieties, the use of different jatropha accessions gives a wide variety of growth and development patterns, leading to unpredictable growth and yields, and sometimes unwanted situations. This is caused by the complex interactions between Genotype (G) x Environment (E) x Management (M), which must be unraveled to fully understand the production potentials in order to understand the true value and applicability of jatropha in different production systems. The different environmental and socio-economic settings determine the (design of) optimal production systems for jatropha, and govern the efficiency of resource use (radiation, water, soil fertility). The aims of this PhD research are the acquirement of those plant parameters that describe growth and development patterns of jatropha production systems in Indonesia and to optimize seed yield per unit of land and/or unit of labour in specific production systems.
    Starting date: ASAP after recruitment latest 1st August 2010.

    Background

    This is a PhD position in the program “JARAK: the commoditization of an alternative biofuel crop in Indonesia”. The program comprises research on policy, legislation, technical crop qualities and production possibilities, and socio-economic impact of Jatropha cultivation in Indonesia and is part of a broader research program funded by NWO and KNAW on “Agriculture beyond Food”. The program includes 6 projects carried out by four PhD researchers and two Post-Doc researchers from Indonesia and the Netherlands. JARAK is an interdisciplinary research program of 5 Dutch academic institutes with their Indonesian partner institutes. Three other PhD researchers in the JARAK program are based at Leiden University (Van Vollenhoven Institute, Law Faculty, and the Institute of Cultural Anthropology , Social Science Faculty) and at Universitas Gadjah Mada in Yogyakarta.
