A Ph.D. position in the theoretical nanoelectronics group at DTU-Nanotech is available
The basic aim is to develop a theoretical methodology and use it to calculate electronic transport properties and the effect of electronic current at the atomic scale in nano-conductors. In this project we especially wish to focus on the current-induced excited atomic dynamics in molecular-scale contacts. Our target is to model and predict the outcome of concrete experimental situations using first principles calculations based on density functional theory and non-equilibrium Greens function techniques [1-3].
The Ph.D. will be associated with the Theoretical Nanoelectronics group at the Department of Micro and Nanotechnology (www.nanotech.dtu.dk/TNE) and will engage in a close collaboration with the Nano-Science Center, University of Copenhagen and international partners on both the theoretical and experimental side.

Department of Mechanical Engineering is looking for 3 Ph.D. in Materials and Surface Technology related to strengthen our strategic research activities in Materials in Sustainable Energy Applications.
The section for Materials and Surface Engineering is involved in externally financed national and international strategic research programs through which the following Ph.D. positions have become available:
Modeling of high temperature corrosion of metals in biomass-fired power plants (financed through the Danish Research Council for Strategic Research)
This PhD project addresses the modeling of the interaction of metallic materials with aggressive environments as occurring in biomass fired power plants, most notably under hot corrosion conditions. A combination of materials modeling and experimental investigations under laboratory conditions will be used to arrive at designing alternative materials that potentially can withstand hot corrosion environments.
Alternative coatings for protection against high temperature corrosion (financed though EU 7th frame work program
This PhD project addresses the protection of metallic materials exposed to aggressive gas atmospheres at elevated temperatures. The development/investigation of thin ceramic coatings deposited on high temperature materials will be the main task in the project, i.e. surface engineering for high temperature corrosion protection. The project encompasses the disciplines metallurgy, surface engineering and chemistry.
Failure mechanisms in metallic components of Wind turbine drive trains (financed through the Danish Research Council for Strategic Research)
The PhD project addresses the investigation of failure mechanisms in gears and bearings of wind turbine drive trains in relation to the manufacturing history, the materials choice and the drift conditions (among which lubrication and loading history). The ultimate goal is to propose optimized materials choice and materials manufacturing to withstand typical loading conditions.
Starting date: As soon as possible.

The organization
The Agrotechnology & Food Sciences Group is part of Wageningen UR where fundamental and applied sciences complement each other. As an important European player, we carry out top-level research and work alongside authoritative partners within the international business world as well as the government on “Healthy food in a biobased society”. We have a crucial role in innovations within the market. Entrepreneurship and professionalism are what define us. In short, we are an interesting, international employer of stature.
Wageningen University and Research centre
Delivering a substantial contribution to the quality of life. That’s our focus – each and every day. Within our domain, healthy food and living environment, we search for answers to issues affecting society – such as sustainable food production, climate change and alternative energy. Of course, we don’t do this alone. Every day, 6,500 people work on ‘the quality of life’, turning ideas into reality, on a global scale.
Could you be one of these people? We give you the space you need.

Ph.D. Programme: Mathematical Methods in Natural Sciences (MMNS) aims to provide research programmes covering modelling, mathematical/numerical analysis and computer
implementation/simulation of the investigated models. Each Ph.D. project is meant to provide a better understanding of certain phenomena arising from industrial innovations,
natural or medical sciences. The ambition is to equip the students with the manifold qualifications expected from future leading researchers in academia and industry.
Ph.D. students participating in the project will be provided with intensive training in innovative mathematical methods for complex structures and processes. Moreover MMNS will
hold an international visitors programme, embedded in a world-wide network of partner institutions. Specific measures and incentives will promote the early integration of doctoral
students into the international scientific community and foster application of modern mathematical methods to challenging problems in biosciences and material sciences. The
programme will strongly collaborate with the international network of partners and will promote transfer of new methodologies to industry.
- four-year studies in one of the Polish research units of the consortium;
- foreign visits in the partner institutions for a duration of 6-24 months;
- personal stipends for Ph.D. students amounting to 3000 PLN a month (during foreign visits the stipend will be increased up to 4500 PLN);
- research grants covering the costs of computer equipment and international/domestic conferences

The Hawkesbury Institute for the Environment at UWS is seeking an excellent doctoral candidate to undertake a funded project entitled “Microorganisms, Ecosystem Functions and Climate Change”. About the Project This study shall investigate the effect of various climate variables (increased temperature, carbon dioxide and altered precipitation) and extreme weathers (flooding and extreme drought) on soil biodiversity, certain ecosystem functions and link this change in functions with changes in associated functional groups such as microbes involved in carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus cycling.
The project aims to improve mechanistic understanding of feedback responses to climate change which could be further exploited to improve the national and global prediction. This is a very flexible project and could be modified according to interests of the successful candidate. As a doctoral student, you will gain experience in experimental design, GHG measurement techniques and range of state of art of molecular approaches such as Terminal Restriction Fragment Length Polymorphism (TRFLP), cloning and sequencing, pyrosequencing, multivariate statistical analyses, scientific writing and presentation. During the course of the project, you will have access to some of the best known scientists in this field for consultation and advice.
There is a possibility of the successful candidate spending a period of time at Imperial College, London (UK) for sample collection and training in process measurements. Criteria The successful applicant should: demonstrate excellent academic performance in the study of microorganisms, ecosystem functions and climate change or a related discipline. hold qualifications and experience equal to an Australian First Class Bachelor Honours degree.
Please contact the Chief Investigator to discuss your qualifications if you are unsure about your eligibility be highly motivated to undertake further study at an advanced level International applicants must also demonstrate a high level of proficiency in the English language. Please refer to the University`s web site for information about English language requirements.
What does the scholarship provide? Tax free stipend of $32,860 per annum and a funded place in the doctoral degree. International candidates may be charged fees. Funding is also available for project costs.

The research involves the design and analysis of methods for trajectories of objects moving in 2- or 3-dimensional space. A proper definition of a “median trajectory” based on a collection of trajectories is sought, as well as efficient algorithms for computing such a median. The definition and algorithms should be robust when noise or outliers are present. The research continues by investigating how median trajectories can be used in various applications. These include trajectory collection visualization, trajectory clustering, classification, and related problems, for which efficient algorithms and implementations should be developed. This will be done in collaboration with researchers in these application areas, whose data will be used.
