The Advanced Water Management Centre (AWMC) is at the leading edge of environmental biotechnology and microbial ecology related to water and wastewater management and treatment. The Centre has a strong contingent of staff and students based at the University of Queensland's St. Lucia Campus (see http://www.awmc.uq.edu.au/). The Centre integrates research experience with new ideas in the interdisciplinary field of biological science and environmental process engineering. Our strong international reputation is derived from our high quality scientific output that is well supported by our research funding
The AWMC has a very active, world renowned research group in the field of bioelectrochemical systems and microbial ecology. We are looking for 2 highly motivated postdoctoral research fellows with an outstanding track record. The project involves the meta’omic (genomic and transcriptomic) characterization of microbial populations in two engineered environments, i.e. bioelectrochemical systems (BESs) and anaerobic digesters (AD)and contributes to a new collaborative initiative in “Biological solutions for energy and greenhouse gas challenges” with CSIRO’s Energy Transformed Flagship Research Program. We wish to address fundamental questions about the composition and functionality of these communities, and monitor community dynamics and evolution, through an intensive sequencing program. Experience with heterologous gene expression would be beneficial but not essential.
We are looking for two highly motivated postdoctoral research fellows, with a strong academic background and/or professional experience in the following areas or combinations thereof: molecular microbiology, genomics, genetics, bioinformatics, environmental engineering, chemical sciences or biotechnology. Applications are welcome immediately with an application deadline of 30 June 2010 or earlier if the position has been filled.
A starting salary of $64,063.30 per annum or higher is offered, depending on the seniority of the candidate, for a period of three years. Fellows who manage to raise a personal fellowship will receive a top up, amount depending on the level of the additional fundraising.
The University of Queensland (UQ) is one of Australia's premier learning and research institutions. It is the oldest university in Queensland and has produced generations of graduates who have gone on to become leaders in all areas of society and industry. The University is a founding member of the national Group of Eight, an alliance of research-strong "sandstone" universities committed to ensuring that Australia has higher education institutions which are genuinely world class. It belongs also to the global Universitas 21 alliance. This group aims to enhance the quality of university outcomes through international benchmarking and a joint venture e-learning project with The Thomson Corporation.
